I came across this in this month’s .Net magazine.

Using data from your Facebook account the site generates a virtual “museum” of your life (or what it knows about it based on Facebook)

I tried to do a screen grab of the tour of mine ..Apologies for the audio

One of the things that I love about Brussels is the beer.

There are literally hundreds of amazing beers to try out and there are hundreds of bars dotted across the city.

While I was there this week I discovered that I’m quite partial to Kriek. Kriek isn’t a brand of beer – it’s a type. Basically it’s cherry beer.
This may seem like an odd combination, but it’s excellent.

A lot of bars have bottled Kriek, but several have it on tap, so you can grab a nice big glass of it if you want (I know I did!)

Volcano Domain Special

Volcano Domain Special

Volcano Domain Promo, originally uploaded by blacknight.

I was meant to be heading to Brussels this week for a meeting with Eurid, but that looks like it’s being scrapped. I was also meant to be going to Milan for TRAFFIC plus a few days break. I’m still not sure if that’s going to go ahead..

So last night while chatting with James we came up with a volcano related promotion, since it’s really messed with a lot of people’s plans ..

Full details over on our blog (http://blog.blacknight.com/volcano-getting-you-down-dont-blow-your-top.html) but basically you get to save money on domains!

Slovenia Slovenia

Slovenia Slovenia

DSC00323.JPG, originally uploaded by blacknight.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I headed off to Bled, Slovenia a little over a week ago.

As the plane came into land in Ljubljana I could see the countryside and it looked lovely. Unfortunately the weather on Friday evening was terrible (torrential rain), so I didn’t get a chance to explore Bled until Saturday.

The town of Bled is tiny and dominated by the lake and castle. What there is of the town seems to be a mish-mash of cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels. It’s a lovely spot to spend a couple of days in, though you wouldn’t want to spend too much time there as it’s truly tiny.

The food was fantastic pretty much everywhere (not a fastfood in sight!) and the landscape is truly stunning.

It was great to meet up with a bunch of people from the industry and to make plenty of new acquaintances. Kudos to the guys from the Russian registry for organising it all so well.

Wandering Around Sydney Avoiding The Rain

Wandering Around Sydney Avoiding The Rain

IMG_0528.JPG, originally uploaded by blacknight.

Although I’ve been in Sydney since Monday morning a combination of jetlag and bad weather has meant that I haven’t explored the place as much as I would have liked.

Today changed all that and I spent most of the day wandering around the city with a few other people who are also over here for the ICANN meeting.

Aer Lingus’ Stealth Charges

Aer Lingus’ Stealth Charges

I’m heading over to Paris in a couple of weeks to attend the ICANN meeting.

While I may have booked my hotel room ages ago I still haven’t organised my flights. Flying from Dublin to Paris shouldn’t be hard to organise as so many of the airlines serve the route.

So earlier today I decided to look into my options.

Air France’s rates seem ok, but I thought I’d check both Aer Lingus and British Airways as well. I’m not interested in Ryanair, as I don’t really fancy a trek from Beauvais, while I know that getting from Charles de Gaulle is quite easy.

That an airline would add fuel surcharges and possibly baggage handling charges is one thing, but that the “national” carrier would have the gall to charge a 6 euro credit card handling fee is nuts!

For all bookings except those originating in the USA, there is a handling fee charged. Charges as follows:

€6 per person Credit Card handling fee.

€2 per person Debit Card handling fee

With the volume of transactions that a company like Aer Lingus is processing I would suspect that their cost per transaction at the merchant level is negligible. I don’t know who they use to manage their payment gateway, but whether it’s inhouse or outsourced there is no way that it could possibly cost 6 euro. And a 2 euro debit card fee is just as insane, as they actually cost less to process.

I already mentioned their inane issues with browser language detection issues (everyone is in the US according to them!)

I’d love to know how people would react if we started chucking on CC handling fees.. Actually, I wouldn’t want to know. The very idea of it makes me feel queasy

A Bit Of Self Promotion

I’ll be a guest on Domain Masters tomorrow evening where I’ll be chatting with Jothan Frakes

The show is on live at 7pm EST, which works out as being midnight Irish time unless my calculations are off.

I’ve been on the radio a few times in the past, but this is the first time I’ll have been on an internet only radio station – Webmaster Radio

As the show’s name suggests, the topic of conversation will be domains and the domain name industry.

I’m really honoured to have been invited, as it’s one of the few online radio stations that I ever listen to.

Netscape Is Dead

Netscape is now officially dead.

It’s kind of sad to see it go, but I guess it was inevitable. While it may have been one of the dominant browsers back in mid 90s I can’t even remember the last time someone mentioned using it.

I think Netscape was the second browser that I used. The first one was of course Mosaic

Nowadays my primary browser on Linux, Apple and Windows (which I rarely use) is Firefox.

Farewell Netscape. You served us well

Pre-Christmas Bedlam

It looks like the runup to Christmas this year is going to be pretty hectic!

I’m not going to complain – hectic is good!

At the moment we’re in the process of putting the final touches to the new look and feel for the company site. So far the blog and forum have been reskinned and the support desk is in process… I should probably think about redoing all my business cards as well …. Hmmm.. More work !

Since we’re switching all the URLs over to the .com we’ll also have to update a lot of our ad copy.

Some of the things I’ve been trying to sort out over the last few weeks have gone extremely well, so well that I was pleasantly surprised. In typical Irish fashion the more complex issues have proven easy to deal with, but the relatively easy ones have been an absolute nightmare (I’ll probably go into more detail about some of these issues when I have a chance)

We’re also putting the final touches to a couple of projects we’ve been working on for the last few months. It’s all finally beginning to take shape, so hopefully I’ll be able to share the details with the public in a few weeks.. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. There’s still a lot of work to be done and plenty of testing and re-testing before we’ll be happy with it all – sorry if that’s all a bit vague!

On a personal front I was down in Cork for the weekend, so I was able to see my mother’s new house. It’s almost finished, so she’s now in the throes of deciding on which type of kitchen to put in. If all goes according to plan she should be able to move in early in the new year. I’ll see if I can upload some of the photos I took on Saturday, though they’re probably not as high a resolution as I’d have liked. (Note to self – check the n95′s settings)

Before that, of course, there’s Christmas… I was toying with the idea of heading overseas, but I think that idea’s been shelved. I’ll be heading off to LA again in January anyway, so I’ll spend a reasonably quiet Christmas at home.
My grandfather will be spending a few days with us this year, so it looks like I’ll be heading down to Ennis to collect him, while my mother will be dropping him back up.

The guys from Enum 353 are holding a “user day” this week, but I won’t be able to attend, which is a pity, as it looks like it could have been interesting.
