Off To Dakar In The Morning

Off To Dakar In The Morning

Tomorrow I’ll be travelling .. The ICANN “circus” is moving to Dakar, Senegal for the public meeting so I’ll be joining several hundred internet policy geeks …

Unfortunately Vodafone don’t have a proper roaming agreement in Dakar, so I probably won’t have a phone for the week! :(

James has been playing around with Lego figures, his camera and photoshop.

The results are quite amusing – though obviously I’m more than a little biased :)

Going Digital Campaign Site – Taking Dire Websites To New Lows

Irish television will be 100% digital within the next 12 months. Analog will cease to exist.

A lot of people supposedly don’t know about this, so our “beloved” government decided to spend taxpayers’ money promoting the switch to digital. This is the “dog’s dinner” of a website that they’re using for the campaign:

GoingDigital.ie Definitely Won't Win Any Awards

I guess I should be happy that they didn’t spend any money on the website and hire an actual designer .. though I’m pretty sure an off the shelf template site would have looked better than this..

Pity, as raising awareness about the switch to digital is pretty important, though I honestly don’t believe that any ISP will be wasting money on buying spectrum when it’s made available ..

This is doing the rounds on Youtube at the moment and it’s pretty good – only Apple sounds and the voice of Steve Jobs were used in its creation:

Playing With Flickr and WordPress

Playing With Flickr and WordPress

I use Flickr as the main location for storing and sharing my photos. Some photos end up on Posterous and the odd one might end up on Facebook, but pretty much everything is on Flickr.

One of the things that I love about Flickr! is that you can easily post a photo to your blog from it (once you’ve setup the integration), but by default it gets published immediately. While that might not be a problem for a lot of people I like having a bit more control over my content. So being able to go back in and edit text, add tags, categories etc., is something that I really want. Luckily Donncha wrote a small plugin that does just that – install it and your Flickr to WordPress posts will end up in your “drafts”.

The other thing I was interested in doing was “bringing” my photos into this site. There are plenty of Flickr plugins for WordPress. They all operate in slightly different ways, so I’m currently playing around with them here.

Check Your Google Map Listing

While looking for hotels I often turn to Google maps so that I can find hotels close to my destination. I’m currently planning a trip to Paris for Christmas, so I’m looking for hotels close to my aunt’s apartment.

It looks like the owners of some hotels aren’t keeping an eye on Google maps, as this is what I’m seeing beside a hotel I know to be open:

If you bother going to the full “places” page for the hotel you have the option to correct the listing, but it’s kind of scary that:

  • somebody was able to flag the hotel as being closed
  • the hotelier didn’t notice

I’m not sure what method Google uses to check if a venue is closed or not, but you’d have to wonder how much revenue a hotel would lose if the first result for it flags it as being”permanently closed”.

So if your business is listed on Google maps (places) then maybe you should check your listing from time to time to make sure that a competitor hasn’t shut you down!
