Technology.ie Podcast Is Go

Conn and I have been trying to get a podcast series off the ground for the last while, but between one thing and another there’s been loads of delays.. However we finally did manage to get something up and running earlier today – warts and all

All feedback welcome (over there!)

AFNIC Invite

I’m still a little confused by the French domain registry AFNIC opting for an English title for some of its 25th anniversary events, but I really like the design elements they’ve been using.

Here’s the latest one:

I’ve no idea if I’ll actually get on the guest list, but I signed up anyway :)

One of the things that I’m personally very interested in is language. Being able to register EU domain names using the correct characters (ie. with the accents etc) is just one part of the puzzle, but it’s a very important one, so I’m delighted that I was able to register Mícheál.eu yesterday.

It currently won’t display “properly” in most browsers – you’ll end up seeing the punycode version instead :(

Hopefully Eurid will sort this out soon!

Webfest In Budva

Webfest In Budva

Webfest kicked off earlier this morning in Budva, Montenegro. So far we’ve heard from the CEO of Nordeus, who run a massive social gaming solution on Facebook. The list of speakers is truly impressive and I suspect this is going to be a very exciting and interesting two days

Bypassing Inane Web Filters On Hotel Wifi

configuring SOCKS proxy in Firefox

The hotel I’m staying in has a rather annoying filter on their net connection. Basically it won’t allow me to connect to any URL with the string “xxx” in it. It’s probably blocking other “content” as well, but since I’m a registrar trying to sell .xxx domain names I noticed the “xxx” filter pretty quickly!

Circumventing the stupid filter didn’t take much.

Using SSH and a server I have in Dublin I was able to bypass it in less than 30 seconds (thanks to Paul)

Open a terminal and run this command (change the IP / hostname to a machine you have access to)

ssh root@$ip -D1080

Then tell Firefox (or your preferred browser) to use a SOCKS proxy to connect to the web:

configuring SOCKS proxy in Firefox

configuring SOCKS proxy in Firefox

And now your web connection will run via your SSH tunnel :)

No more stupid filters!

Market Forces At Work – Coffee In CDG

Market Forces At Work – Coffee In CDG

Airports are always expensive places for coffee and other refreshments, though some are more expensive than others.

This morning I’m en route to Tivat, via Paris, so I’m having coffee in terminal 2B of Paris CDG.

There is only one cafe, so they have a monopoly on all passengers who are “airside”. This monopoly is reflected in the prices:

small bottle of water – between €2.90 and €3.40

espresso €2.40

Cappuccino €4.50! (and that’s not a tall one)

If the cafe had some competition I suspect its prices would be a LOT lower, though the cost of doing business in an airport (rent etc) would probably mean that the prices were still higher than what you’d pay “downtown”.

Competition in any market is a good thing. It stimulates and motivates companies to provide better services and products to retain and grow their market share. Consumers benefit.

Pity the same rules don’t apply in CDG :(

Webfest Here I Come Plus Save On dotMe Domains

I’m heading off to Montenegro tomorrow morning for Webfest. The lineup is impressive and I’m really looking forward to it.

I’ll be speaking about marketing on a shoestring budget (assuming I can put my $random thoughts into semi-coherent Powerpoint slides .. )

Anyway to celebrate the event and to brighten up the week we (Blacknight) are doing a special discounted offer on .me domain registration. Full details here

20 Year School Reunion

Later this year my secondary school class will be meeting up for a 20 year reunion.

20 years seem to have flown by so quickly..

Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the opening of EuroDisney as well and previous employees are organising to meetup there. I’ve still got my Disney “opening crew” mug somewhere in the house. I did have a t-shirt, but I’ve no idea where that ended up (the bin possibly?)

I probably won’t be able to attend either event, due to previous commitments, but 20 years is a long time.

I haven’t been back to EuroDisney since I left there in 1995. I’m not sure how I’d feel about seeing it now.

I’m still in touch with some people from both my secondary school and my time at Eurodisney, but I regret not keeping in touch with more of them.
