Movable Type To WordPress Permalink Oddness

Movable Type To WordPress Permalink Oddness

For some bizarre reason the WordPress importer changes the post names from “thing-other-thing” to “thing_other_thing” ie. replacing the dash with an underscore.

The simplest way to fix it is to run a bit of SQL directly on the database:

update wp_posts set post_name = replace(post_name,’_',’-');

Thanks to the person who provided the solution here

TimThumb and Zemanta Don’t Play Nice Together

TimThumb and Zemanta Don’t Play Nice Together

Over the last few days I’ve been testing a few WordPress themes that use TimThumb for generating thumbnails of both images and video.

TimThumb works very well in most situations, though you can run into the odd issue if your directory permissions aren’t correct. In order for it to work it has to have somewhere it can store the thumbnail images.. and that has to be writeable by the server.

However, unless the server you are on has incredibly tight security settings, it’s quite easy to “fix” that problem.
But I was still seeing issues on one site where it simply refused to display any thumbnails.
To add to the frustration there were no errors in the logs.

After pulling out some of my hair (I don’t have a lot to begin with) I finally realised that the issue was with Zemanta’s invisible pixel image.

Removing it from the posts resolved the issue.

Invading Europe

Invading Europe

Our latest silly marketing campaign is centred around .eu domain names.
The concept we came up with is “invade Europe” and here is one of the graphics we’re using

Hilton Brussels City Still Have Stupid broadband Limits – False Advertising!

Hilton Brussels City Still Have Stupid broadband Limits – False Advertising!

Back in October of last year I got bitten by Hilton Brussels City’s stupid broadband limits.
The limits are inane, but the false advertising is what really bugs me.

Several months later and I see nothing has changed even though they assured me at the time that it was a “mistake”.

Here is what I’m seeing this morning (again!):

Last time I checked 250 megs is NOT unlimited.

No wonder some of my American friends think European hotels are backwards!

DAA Lounge Weirdness – Mac Users Not Welcome?

DAA Lounge Weirdness – Mac Users Not Welcome?

I’m sitting in the DAA lounge in Dublin airport’s shiny new T2.

I should be able to (ab)use the free wifi, but for some bizarre reason I can’t.

When I asked they looked at my Mac and told me that it was because their wifi setup doesn’t work with Macs!

Huh?

I might be losing my mind, but I’m pretty sure that I was in here a couple of months ago and that I was able to use the wifi then without any issue, so what on earth have they changed?

Confused.

Yet Another Star Wars Release

Yet Another Star Wars Release

Star Wars is coming to bluray later this year. This is a good thing ™, but it’s also going to cost fans a chunk of change to get their hands on high definition versions of their favourite films.

This cartoon amused me:

And So I adopted An Elephant ..

And So I adopted An Elephant ..

Earlier today I finally bit the bullet and “adopted” an elephant via the WWF‘s website.

And here’s the cert:

Fortunately they don’t actually send you the elephant as I wouldn’t know where to put it .. Queue a bunch of silly elephant jokes ..

Of course I could have adopted a different type of animal, but I went for the elephant, as it seemed appropriate

Are We Fixated With the 80s?

Are We Fixated With the 80s?

I was a teenager in the 1980s.
I remember watching a lot of silly films in the 1980s. Some starred Michael J Fox and are still quite funny even now. Others weren’t that funny then and simply aged badly.

I don’t hate the 1980s – it actually wasn’t such a bad decade really. And it was probably a lot more tasteful than the 1970s ..

But why on earth do so many people have fixations with 1980s culture and technology?

The Commodore 64 was a fantastic invention for its period. But nearly 30 years later it’s just a curiousity.

Do I need a C64 in 2011?

Some people seem to think that you do, so they’re relaunching the C64 and Amiga!

And talking about Michael J Fox makes me think of Back to the Future ..
And what does Back to the Future make you think of?
Why the De Lorean of course!
While you can still pick up original De Lorean cars both in Europe and the US, there’s now a US based company making them again.
Starting at $57500 the new DeLorean car has all the latest toys, while still retaining the 1980s feel

I think I’ll pass for the moment!
