Amazon Italia Now Live!

I’m not sure exactly when the site opened its doors, but Amazon Italia is now open for business.

It may not carry the full range of products that the UK or US site carry, but it does carry a good selection of titles.
Some of the features that I would use don’t seem to be available at present, so there’s no way, for example, to setup a wishlist.

I guess these and other features will become available over time.

Now where’s the Spanish site?

Who I Would Vote For

Who I Would Vote For

There’s probably going to be an election in Ireland in early 2011

Since I don’t trust any of our politicians or have confidence in their skills I’ll probably be opting for “alternative” candidates .. such as Squishy:

Display Issues On This Site

Display Issues On This Site

For the last couple of months I’ve been getting reports from people of issues viewing the contents on this site. More often than not I’ve been unable to duplicate the issue, but there obviously was an issue to be dealt with.

I’ve switched the template on this site over to a slightly different one, so if people are still having issues please let me know – just make sure that you aren’t caching the old CSS (do a hard refresh if you’re a “regular”)

Samsung Galaxy S vs IPhone

Samsung Galaxy S vs IPhone

I’ve been using an iPhone for quite some time now and really like it. However it’s not without its shortcomings – the battery being the most obvious culprit.

With that in mind I was interested in testing the Samsung Galaxy S (android) phone when we got our hands on one last week.

The Samsung Galaxy uses Android as its OS, so instead of using iTunes to access apps you use the Android Store, which is linked to your Google account.

The version of Android that shipped with the phone was one version behind. Unfortunately the only way to upgrade is via a Windows only desktop application. I was unable to get this to work on either Parallels or on a Windows 7 machine. It did, however, work fine with my mother’s Windows XP machine.

I am quite a heavy data user, as I use my phone for email, twitter, facebook and other things when I’m not at a desk.

So how does the Samsung Galaxy compare with the iPhone.

For web browsing there’s no real difference, though Safari’s multiple windows (pages) interface is very handy and I miss it. The Galaxy can open multiple windows, but unlike Safari on the iPhone, it loses the windows when you switch between apps.

Email, however, is a key function for me.
Setting up an Exchange account on the Galaxy is pretty easy – almost as easy as on the iPhone. Unfortunately, however, the iPhone’s interface beats the Galaxy’s handsdown. The Galaxy will display my various folders, but rearranges them according to its own internal logic. This means that the folders I access most frequently on my desktop (or my iPhone) aren’t the ones near the top. It also throws really unhelpful connection errors from time to time, which are quite hard to diagnose.

Installing other applications on the phone can be done either via the Android marketplace or using the Samsung application installer. There are a very wide variety of apps available and most of them have similar functionality to their iPhone equivalents. While in iPhone world I had to pay for a usable SSH client I was able to find a very nice SSH client for the Galaxy for free, which was nice.

Battery life on the Galaxy is probably marginally better than the iPhone, so that’s a plus in its favour.

The application manager is handy for seeing what resources each application is using and allows you to kill off ones that you don’t need.

There are also a few other features that are pretty handy or slick.

You can, for example, turn your Galaxy into a wireless access point very easily. So you can easily share your 3G connection with your laptop or iPad. You can also use it for “tethering”, which is fairly standard on most smartphones.

The “notifications” section at the top of the device’s screen is pretty handy. You can instantly see how many new emails you have, messages and various other updates from the accounts you have configured on the phone.

However there are quite a few “features” of the phone / OS that are incredibly annoying.

A lot of the time the phone goes to a completely black screen while an app is opening or doing something. During these “blackouts” the device is completely unresponsive.

So would I swap my iPhone for the Samsung Galaxy?

Realistically – no. It’s a nice enough device, but the email client alone is enough to put me off making a permanent switch.

Beatles Available On iTunes – Who Cares?

The “big” announcement from Apple today was the release of the Beatles catalogue on iTunes.

Yes – The Beatles were and still are an incredibly popular group.

Making their catalogue easily available to millions of iTunes users will probably lead to a bump in sales.

But don’t people already have The Beatles on CD etc?

And why is Apple making this much of a big deal about it?

Irish Garda (Police) Website Falls Over

Irish Garda (Police) Website Falls Over

Looks like the Irish police (gardai) website has collapsed under the server load:
garda-website-down.jpgWhy is this happening?
Well it’s all down to the new speed trap system that is going live this week (today I think). The Gardai are listing all the locations of the traps on their site, but they obviously didn’t think that just about everyone in the country would want to go and look at the list ..

More on the RTE site

And seemingly there are copies of the location list floating around if you want one!

RIPE 61 In Rome

RIPE 61 In Rome
Via Veneto

Image by Pablo G. Pando via Flickr

I’m in Rome this week for the RIPE meeting.

I’ll be involved in a session on abuse later during the week, so I’ll be spending the next couple of days trying to get my head around what RIPE does!

The venue is pretty central on Via Veneto (The Westin), while I opted to stay in a fairly simple hotel around the corner. Of course I didn’t realise that the hotel is right beside a lapdancing club when I checked in .. not that I’m overly concerned ..

So I’m in a hotel in the centre of Rome surrounded by a lot of very nice and friendly geeks ..

Aer Lingus Site Annoyances

Aer Lingus Site Annoyances

I fly with Aer Lingus regularly.

However there are some things about their online systems that I find incredibly annoying.

You can register for an online account with them, like you can with just about any airline these days.

You would think that the online account would store ALL your details so that booking flights would be a matter of a couple of clicks, but they don’t. You still have to confirm some details with each and every booking.

However, that isn’t the biggest annoyance.

I’m flying with them tomorrow to Rome, so Tripit sent me a reminder to checkin online.

This is where the Aer Lingus system just falls flat on its face.

If I go to the Aer Lingus website I can login and I can then see a list of my current reservations:

aerlingus-reservations.jpg

So logically you would think that I could now checkin online, but I can’t.

Viewing the details of a reservation just brings up a summary:

aerlingus-booking-details.jpg

Nothing else

So how do I checkin online?

I have to go back to the main page again and click on the “manage booking” link which eventually takes me to this screen:

online-checkin-form-from-hell.jpg

And this is where I get even more frustrated.

While the booking reference code is unique they still expect you to complete all the fields on the form in order to checkin online.

Why oh why?

What Startups Need To Realise

What Startups Need To Realise

This video has been doing the rounds for the last few days. It’s amusing (and a small bit NSFW) but also very realistic. The number of times I’ve seen emails and forum queries from people who think that their idea is original and guaranteed overnight success ..

There’s nothing wrong with being confident in your plans, but you need to be realistic!
