Domain Switch – No More .com – Long Live .me!

Domain Switch – No More .com – Long Live .me!

whynotshowyourselfalittlelove.jpg

I’ve always been a very strong believer in “eating my own dog food”, so when we started offering .tel domain names I got one for myself and started using it. I’ve had a few .me domains since the launch, but apart from using a couple for work, I hadn’t moved any of my personal sites over to .me

That, as you can see in your browser’s address bar, has now changed.

Mneylon.com will still resolve, but you’ll be moved to mneylon.me

I was half thinking of using micheleneylon.me, but it’s a bit long.. What do you think?

In any case this site is now residing under mneylon.me

And if you want to get a .me domain for your own blog or project head over to the only Irish registrar for .me domains – Blacknight and grab one now

ThePirateBay Eircom and IRMA

ThePirateBay Eircom and IRMA

The frontpage of The Pirate Bay currently has this graphic:

PirateBay Homepage

and is happily promoting a service to help Eircom users anonymise their internet usage.

In case you’re wondering why…

Eircom, one of Ireland’s largest ISPs, has announced that they will start cutting off filesharers using a “3 strikes” system in conjunction with IRMA.

Due process? Forget it.

The ISP will get to act as judge, jury and executioner:

Infringing customers will be initially telephoned by Eircom to see if they are aware of the activity on their broadband network. If the customer is identified a third time, they will have their service withdrawn for seven days. If they are caught a fourth time their broadband connection will be cut off for a year

How long before this has an impact on business?

So while Eamon Ryan likes to wax lyrically about our “smart economy”, IRMA, a private organisation, is getting Eircom, another private organisation, to replace due process.

It’s a slippery slope…

UPDATE May 26th : Eircom now have an FAQ explaining how it will all work. I’ve also posted in greater length and detail on the company blog

Brussels Here I Come!

Brussels Here I Come!

I’m heading off to Brussels tomorrow morning on the early morning flight.
Eurid‘s registrar board, which I am a member of, is meeting on Monday, so I’ll have Sunday to spend exploring the city.

The last time I was in Brussels was over 10 years ago when I was doing a job for the university.

I’m looking forward to the trip, as I should be able to get to see the latest Luc Besson film, as well as being able to enjoy some good Belgian cuisine.

A couple of useful sites I’ve come across so far include a restaurant guide and a cinema guide.

Although I’ll be back on Tuesday it looks like I’ll be spending the rest of the week at events and meetings, as I’m scheduled to speak at the IPv6 summit on Wednesday and I’m also shortlisted for an award at the IIA Net Visionary Awards on Thursday evening.
