Which Mac OSX Antivirus?

by in apple

While Macs are a lot less likely to get targetted by viruses there are still some viruses “in the wild” that target them.

So which antivirus software should I be using?

Which is the best?

Which is the worst?

Why is one better (or worse) than another?

I’m not concerned about costs, but I am concerned about functionality etc., ie. I don’t want some RAM hogging pile of junk that leaves my desktop completely unresponsive

Any / all suggestions welcome !

I have one mac using symantec. It’s turned off.
I have another mac using ClamX. They basically say on their website that they don’t any signatures, but running A/V is a best practice.

    Hi Michelle,
There’s quite a few security firms jumping on the Mac OS Security bandwagon again…
In no particular order they include some well known Windows AV Vendors
    1. Symantec
    2. McAfee
    3. Sophos
There are also 2x New Entries (actually, one of them (F-Secure) is returning to the Mac OS Market).
    1. F-Secure (Early BETA)
    2. Kaspersky Lab (Early BETA)
I’ve used Symantec’s offering which I found to have minimal impact on performance. It also detects windows malware which is useful in a mixed OS network. I have never seen Symantec AV for OS X detect malicious software targeting the mac os platform… only windows stuff.
There are trials available for all of the above… so maybe you can give them a go?

Criminy, this never even crossed my mind. I didn’t even know there was anti-virus software for the Mac.
