(In)Famous (?) At Last?

Steve Jobs has Fake Steve Jobs. Shel Israel has a puppet. Paul Walsh has Walsh Watch.

It seems I've now got the next best thing - my own "wikipedia" page courtesy of Mr Eoin Costello. (He was in the news earlier this week when his hosting company was swallowed up)

I must say I am impressed. I didn't realise that Eoin was such a talented wit and not a bad graphic artist either.

It must have taken a couple of hours to put it all together. So maybe we'll see more of these little works of art now that he isn't distracted by his "booming" business.

Of course if he'd spent more time on his business maybe he would still be a "player" and not another footnote ...

Here's a screenshot of the page in case Mr Costello removes it.

As a web designer, I can assure you he spent a lot longer than 2 hours doing this. One might call it a tad obsessive…

  2. Darren April 9, 2008 at 3:01 pm #

Ha! Brilliant! And will there be a revenge entry?

  3. hostyle April 9, 2008 at 3:11 pm #

No doubt a key part of that keen sense of humour was developed when he was presented with a giant condom as a thank you for stepping down 🙂

Has to be the funniest thing all week. And the most pathetic at the same time.
You don’t even have to provide a revenge entry, his own webpage is embarrassing enough imho

Being unemployed can do strange things to people.

  6. paul April 9, 2008 at 4:08 pm #

It all seems rather childish. It does seem that someone went to a fair bit of effort to do this.
How did you find the page Michele ?

  7. Kae Verens April 9, 2008 at 4:18 pm #

what’s he so angry about? maybe I’m not uptodate on the news, but what has Blacknight to do with Digiweb swallowing Novara? Maybe there was too much competition?

  8. Hairy Mary April 9, 2008 at 5:07 pm #

That Eoin guy fancies you big style. I’d get a mortice lock.

  9. Stephen McCarron April 9, 2008 at 6:03 pm #

Yea, I reckon he harbours secret longings for you Michele 😉
Also, I wouldn’t worry about him taking it offline – the ‘Face of the irish Internet’ genuinely believes people give a crap about his pathetic little life and opinions.

He sent the link to several people including my business partner. He’s also linked to it from his main site

I thought you were very restrained in your post. Well done.

anyone see that interesting email floating around with a euro sum on it 😀 😀 😀
    everyone should play nice

  14. Stephen McCarron April 9, 2008 at 11:17 pm #

    What email Tom?

  15. Stephen McCarron April 10, 2008 at 12:23 am #

Ahhh, ‘that’ email 🙂 Not as much as reported was it 🙂

  16. Geoff April 10, 2008 at 11:18 am #

Nice pic, not a bad likeness, it’s let down by the verbage though, which is a little like what you’d expect to find on a school locker. Biting and obsessive.
    Wikipedia/Simpsons trademark violation anyone ?
Shame for Eoin to have to spend all that hard earned dosh on lawyers fees.

  17. Niall April 10, 2008 at 11:44 am #

    Geoff:
Unfortunately it’s probably covered under parody 🙁

  18. Stephen McCarron April 10, 2008 at 1:17 pm #

Mr. Costello may be sad, bitter, twisted, obsessive and pathetic, but he is not stupid when it comes to the law. I would not be surprised if he had his silicitors opinion before even posting that page, which rather makes it all the more pathetic.

  19. keith bohanna April 10, 2008 at 1:48 pm #

When I sell out for a seven figure sum (must be true – at least one news service made a passing reference to it) I wonder will I take the time to create tributes to the individuals in the Irish Internet space like this one 🙂
Your turning of the cheek is to be complimented Michele aka Dyson Neylon
    keith

  20. Darragh April 11, 2008 at 10:17 am #

it’s just a bit sad and pathetic really, but fair play to you on seeing the funny side.

  21. John April 11, 2008 at 2:26 pm #

I like the line “swallowed up” If I could get my company swallowed up for a 7 figure sum I would jump on it.
He’s certainly has all the time in the world to take the time out to poke fun at people who take themselves a little too seriously.

  22. Mark April 11, 2008 at 4:22 pm #

    @John ^^^
    John is Eoin in English….
    🙂

  23. Aidan Mc Carron April 11, 2008 at 5:17 pm #

A 7 figure sum is only impressive if you don’t have 6 figure debts to pay off 🙂

  24. Eoin Costello April 12, 2008 at 12:12 pm #

As is always the case Kae, there are far more dirty tricks going on behind the scenes in the Irish hosting industry than the public are unaware of(indeed in the past Blacknight has been a victim of them including when the email addresses of their customer base were manually harvested by a competitor and then approached with special transfer offers).
Rather than engage in dirty tricks in response, I prefer a more open approach.
Michele knows full well why that page was put up, when someone tries to shaft my business I don’t take it lying down.

  25. Eoin Costello April 12, 2008 at 12:14 pm #

“the ‘Face of the irish Internet’ genuinely believes people give a crap about his pathetic little life and opinions.”…….. “Mr. Costello may be sad, bitter, twisted, obsessive and pathetic”
Sorry, and I’m the obsessed one? What’s got you so nettled?

  26. Eoin Costello April 12, 2008 at 12:15 pm #

Mark, unlike some players in the Irish hosting industry, when I have something to say I have the guts to do it under my own name, not masquerade under the personas that Novara have been assaulted with for the past 6 weeks such as seansmith, Peter S, tammydillon or marcus fimmell(that’s got to be an anagram of something but I haven’t figured it out yet).

  27. Eoin Costello April 12, 2008 at 12:53 pm #

Aidan, speak for yourself and 365 (we’re not the ones with an AIB indenture secured on our company, (http://www.cro.ie/search/submissionse.asp?number=350330&BI=C Document Ref: 4164145 “C1 MORT/ CHARGE CREATED BY IRISH COMPANY”) and an Auditors qualification on our accounts, yours states that Hosting365 only remains a Going Concern thanks to the bank overdraft and director’s loans(as per Hosting365’s most recent accounts lodged at CRO).
In any case I suppose big bro told you to say that Aidan, although you’re a bit like a kid playing with matches, no one knows what you’re going to blurt out next ( http://www.eoincostello.ie/kclub.html ). I hear that staff at your place know you as angry Baby http://a4.vox.com/6a00c2251fa3b8549d00c2251fca6cf219-120pi
Apart from a small repayable investment by Dublin City Enterprise Board, Novara had no debt at the time of acquisition(in fact it had E283,000 in net cash in the bank) whereas another “leading” Irish hosting company was forced to blag E70,000 grand off his parents on the promise of 10% in the business. The parents eventually got the money back but were told to go whistle for the promised shareholding, must have been a frosty atmosphere at Christmas dinner this year.
I notice from the CRO that the only other investor/director in that company is still his missus(mention of the sales manager having parted with E100,000 for shares hasn’t materialised at the CRO yet) and she was only trusted with a miserable 1 (yes, one) share compared to his 5,556 shares, where’s the trust? Still paranoid that someone might nick his company out from under his nose or is it just greed?
The valuation of Irish hosting companies has now taken a dive with the entry into the market of a well diversified, big hitter with deep pockets. With a number of real data centres under their belt(as opposed to a tarted up comms room on the second floor of an office block) and a commitment to providing Irish jobs (as opposed to screwing cheap deals out of off shore staff) they are on their way to number 1 position.
Ironically I find myself in the same position as when I sold my last business ( http://www.costellojewellers.ie/ ), I have money to invest. If the “leading” hoster was looking for investment to improve their finances I might consider it, although this time I would be going in with my eyes wide open.

@ eoin; lol You should really look into writing a book Eoin , you fiction writing abilities are impressive.
i hear your staff (before you sacked them all Christmas 2006 due to cash flow problems ,i know one of them) use to call you sloth

Eoin – here’s a Euro symbol for you, you appear to be unable to type one yourself.

  30. Eoin Costello April 12, 2008 at 4:10 pm #

In fairness Aidan, your staff have you bang to rights (even you will accept that the trade mark mccarron bushy black eyebrows do meet in the middle) whereas that Goonies thing doesn’t even have a shirt and tie and I always wear a shirt and tie 🙂

    CLARIFICATION
It’s only fair to Michele to clarify that, apart from doing his best to stir things up at a time when he knew we couldn’t comment ( http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055258938&highlight=novara ) and allowing an untrue post about my sister (Novara’s general manager) on his webmaster’s forum by the same persona that was stirring it up in other locations(sean persona), I am not accusing Michele of being seansmith, Peter S, tammydillon or marcus fimmell. I believe that he has professional standards that he observes when it comes to competing in the Irish hosting business.
    Eoin

  32. Niall April 12, 2008 at 4:52 pm #

    Eoin,
So if there’s a rumor going around that two competitors are about to merge, Michele shouldn’t comment on it at all?? Perhaps you should be going around trying to find out who let the cat out of the bag rather than attacking someone who had a genuine interest in finding out whether or not such a merger was about to happen.
Considering Boards.ie censorship of anything to do with hosting, if the only place a thread could remain open on the subject could remain open was http://www.iwf.ie, so be it.
Was this untrue post about your sister reported to the admins at Irish Web Master forum when it was made? (If you’re logged in, there’s a little “Report Post” button over each post.) Would they have had any reason to suspect that it was an untrue statement? Or did you just make an assumption without trying to go through proper channels?
    Niall.

  33. Eoin Costello April 12, 2008 at 8:20 pm #

Niall – I’ve accepted above that it was all an unfortunate coincidence.
Here’s a useless piece of trivia about the Irish hosting industry, what did the managing directors of the 3 largest hosting companies have in common? This room in my house http://www.eoincostello.ie/novara_beg.html , Stephen McCarron worked there when we were business partners and Michele Neylon stayed there as my guest when we were friends.

  34. Niall April 12, 2008 at 8:43 pm #

    Eoin,
If you’ve accepted it all as being an unfortunate coincidence, why haven’t we seen an apology, or at least an admission that it was in bad taste?
    Niall.

  35. Ken Stanley April 12, 2008 at 10:03 pm #

Wow. From someone who relies on some (or all) of you to keep mine and my client’s sites up-and-running, this all makes for some pretty grim reading.

    Hi Niall,
I see that the post on IWF has been removed now(admittedly after it had done its intended job), I have now removed the CBG page.
    Eoin

  38. AJ April 14, 2008 at 10:16 am #

I have to say, I’ve enjoyed both the post and the comments, and if it brings up issues about certain 365 day (minus all the outages and egos) hosting companies within Ireland to attention of a larger audience all well and good.

  39. Rahood April 14, 2008 at 7:21 pm #

Hey Eoin,I think me Ma bought a St Christopher medal off your Da after I went to London back in 88′ Turned me neck Green it did, proper shade of green it was as I recall. I enjoy reading many blogs on the net and this indeed is one. I am in no way connected with any of the sites or people involved but I find all of this very bizarre. I first came across Eoin Costello when he was a councillor and was impressed with his committment and have been aware of his career path. I have found this blog, associated blogs and the help offered by Michele & Blacknight on other forums very informative. As an outsider, I find the dirty laundry in public very strange. I am not aware of the background but if I were the owners of Digiweb or more importantly their clients or the clients of Novara I would be asking serious questions of a piece that is at best distasteful and vindicative in the extreme. I think you have let yourself down very badly Eoin in both a personal and professional capacity. I don’t know the reasons but they would have to be pretty good to warrant your attack?
