Should we switch to a .com?

by in blacknight, marketing, seo

For the last few years we’ve been using a .ie domain to promote our business. Since we are now looking at overseas markets a bit more actively we’ve started using  the .eu

We didn’t have the .com until yesterday….

So now that we have the .com I’m left in a bit of a quandry

Should we market based on the .eu or the .com?

    .Com Full Stop.
Keep the .eu as a reserve but I doubt if many people know what it really means.

To be honest I’ve always wondered up to now why ye did not have the .com. I know you can claim that its a local market but if I suggest blacknight to anyone nearly always the first response is, ‘Is that blacknight.com?’

Judging by the referals I have made to you recently, they were either Irish or UK firms
looking for an Irish provider with servers in Ireland. so I would use either .ie or .co.uk
A few were US but again were looking at the residency issue.

As weird as it sounds… advertise the .eu or the .ie
and people will still type in the .com out of habit.

Use the .eu… so you can be invited to appear in the next Eurid promotional video :)

TomTom – someone else grabbed the .com 5 years ago before we’d shortened our name to “Blacknight” and they weren’t replying to Afternic’s emails until last week.

Chris – Unfortunately the co.uk we’d want to use is taken and was taken many moons ago, which is why we’ve been using the .eu on our print ads in the UK

    Thanks Tom :)
I must check the web logs again to see how many people have used the .com instead of one of the others!

I’d go with the .com … most people I know type in .com first … the .ie gives you potentially more credibility in the irish market … but not in the european / foreign market ..
I’m still not convinced by the .eu’s
(that said I’m going from the .com to the .ie for my own business)

.com all the way here. It’s just too easy to try a domain with .com or .ie before you go the .eu way.
