My mother emailed me earlier today to ask if I was going down to Cork to vote.
It seems that I have a vote in both Cork and Carlow. I will vote in one place only, though I haven't decided which yet.
However it seems that about half our staff have been removed from the register or have had to spend a silly amount of time sorting out their votes.
The turnout at general elections is poor and nobody is expecting it to improve. If you make it awkward for people to exercise their right to vote the situation can hardly improve.

I couldn't agree more. I moved house last year and diligently registered myself with the local authority by sending in the appropriate forms for both myself and my wife.
Then, later in the year, a guy called to the door one evening to check it I was on the electoral register. I told him that I'd already sent in the forms but he asked me to fill them in again ... just in case.
Soon after that I received a letter to say that I was being removed from the register due to a duplicate registration and how they're telling me I can't vote at all!

One of my staff was informed that she would have to present herself in court in order to be able to vote. Of course it transpires that the wording was a little "off", but it's little wonder so many people aren't on the register if they are making it so awkward

Furthermore, a number of years ago, they also tried to tell my wife she could not vote as she was showin up as a British Citizen, which of course, she isn't and never was.
I heard a radio report recently they reckon that up to 250,000 people are incorrectly registered in this country!
And they wanted to introduce electronic voting?
If the government were serious about making it easy for people to vote, the election wouldn't be on a weekday. It's not only students who are disenfranchised in this way, but young professionals who have to leave their home towns to get their first job, or even commuters who have will be too knackered to head to the polling station after sitting in their cars for hours...
Of course, the "opposition" are making plenty of noise about being in favour of weekend voting, but who would bet that the next election would be on a Saturday if a Technicolor Coalition was in charge?

When I was in college I ended up registering to vote in Limerick as well as Cork to get round this. It was a little mental to say the least.
Of course most EU countries have some form of postal voting to cater for this...

Seems I have the vote in both Dublin North (where my family live) and Louth (where I live with my fiancee).
If I use it, it'll be in Louth.
