Dances With Wolves

I think I first saw Dances With Wolves some time back in 1991 or early 1992 when I was living in Cork city. I'm almost sure I saw it at my girlfriend's house on VHS... I saw it again a couple of year's later on the Champs Elysee when the director's cut was released. And over 10 years later I've finally bought it on DVD! The 3 disc special edition is a really nice package. You get two discs with the film (at just under 4 hours taking a break isn't such a bad idea - remember when they used to change reels?) and a third with documentaries and other special features. While watching the main feature you can opt to see which scenes have been added or edited, though I couldn't see an option to play the "original" version (not that I'd want to anyway). The special feature disc is fascinating. Apart from the usual mish-mash of trailers and "behind the scenes" specials that you can expect, there is also a documentary that goes into the film's making in great detail. I have an awful habit of skipping a lot of the special features on DVDs - one "behind the scenes special" is usually as asinine as another, so why waste time with it? The Dances With Wolves documentary, however, is a real eye opener and I'm glad I took the time to watch it. All in all it's a great DVD for any collection and I'm delighted I picked it up (on a whim!)

One of my favourite movies (alongside Jeremiah Johnson). Everyone else I know thinks it's reallllly boring. I love it
