January 2008 Archives
They did a set of Star Wars themed stamps which look really tasty:
If you need to reboot a Windows XP machine from DOS prompt the command is:
shutdown -r
If you just use the command:
shutdown
without passing any other parameters to it you'll get the help screen with a variety of options.
Kind of useful if your PC (located remotely) is acting up and a reboot is required :)
If you've emailed me in the last week or so and haven't got a reply now you know why :)
Of course if your email didn't have a semantic subject line I probably won't find it ever - sorry!
I've also got a bit tired of clients being negatively affected by Wordpress' dumb caching (or simple lack of it!) which has led to this.
All I'll say is this. When this site made it onto the frontpage of Digg the server barely flinched. If I'd been using a default install of Wordpress the site would have taken out the entire server...
He's already posted his first one, which is of a rather odd looking film... Not that I'm surprised by that !
Back in the days of the .com boom in Ireland Peter was a contributor to some of the now defunct RondoMondo sites, including Muse.ie (the original version - not the new one).
I was going to post a link to the archive.org version of the sites, but there is very little to see there unfortunately!
If anyone else would like to post reviews let me know :)
His latest post is about babies...
Go look - it had me in convulsions!
The weekend before DomainFest we were having a drink in the lobby of the hotel when we got to see several stars including John Travolta.
And here is the photo to prove it!
It certainly looks like Atonement will pick up at least one award. I still haven't seen it, but it's had fantastic reviews. I was hoping to see it on the plane back from LA, but I ended up sleeping instead!
Ratatouille, which was one of my favourite films of the last year, has a couple of nominations, but didn't get listed under the "main" film category, which is a pity.
So for the next few weeks I'm going to be trying to watch as many of the nominated films as possible... That should keep me out of trouble for a few days!
Of course I don't have to read all of them, as many are automated etc., but if I'm going to start using a Blackberry at some point I will really need to do some more rejigging of where my email goes!
Once I get home I should be able to get photos off both my camera and my n95. I really must remember to pack a card reader next time! I know there were other people at the conference that had readers, but we never quite seemed to coincide.
This morning I headed up to one of the many malls that dot the city and picked up a few goodies in the Apple Store. My sister's boots proved impossible to acquire, as they only had large sizes (9+) in the department store I found.
The weak dollar combined with post-Christmas sales made a trip to the Virgin Store on Hollywood Boulevard both highly tempting and incredibly dangerous. They were selling a very large selection of DVDs and CDs for $10... I ended up getting a couple of this year's Oscar nominees instead.... They weren't $10, but they were on offer
- clothes you're not going to wear
- adapters for the wrong country
- no card reader, so you can't get photos off your camera
- forgetting silly little things
It's kind of annoying having to wait!
Moral of the story - be better prepared!
This is my third trip to Los Angeles in the last 12 months and my second time in Hollywood.
What is Hollywood famous for?
Movies - naturally, but it's only on this trip that I'm getting to see any films.
So far I've seen I Am Legend and Cloverfield - both in the Chinese Theater, which has pretty good Dolby sound.
Today is the last bit of freedom before DomainFest kicks off, so I'm contemplating going to the cinema again today. I've also been tasked with picking up some boots for my younger sister, but that's proving to be a bit problematic !
Last night was a bit special, as we got to see Harrison Ford, Callista Flockhart and John Travolta who were all at an event in the hotel. Several other stars were meant to be in attendance, though that may have simply been rumour

I went to Warner Brothers this time last year, during my first trip to Los Angeles. At the time The Gilmore Girls was still shooting and on both days we were able to see the crews at work. Two and Half Men was in full production and Sheen waved at us as he drove out. The post-production areas were buzzing and over ten thousand people were on the lot.
One year later and things couldn't be more different.
The writers' strike has meant that production in Hollywood has practically drawn to a complete halt. The lot is almost completely deserted. Sound stages are literally gathering dust.
I spent most of today out at Warner Brothers in Burbank and while I had a great time it was sad to see the place so empty.
On a positive note there has been progress with some groups, with the directors reaching a settlement in the last 24 hours. However there is still no sign of agreement being reached with the writers, so the entertainment industry and those who work in it are on extended "vacation" at present.
You can see it over on the forum - thanks James!
(James was the genius behind the films.ie design as well)
Earlier this morning Secunia reported a serious issue that affected users of both the iPhone and the iPod touch.
The solution? Simply run an update.
But is it that simple?
Well it might not be if you are running a cracked Apple iPhone. Due to Apple's rather odd marketing / sales strategy, which favours the creation of monopolies, a lot of people have been buying Apple iPhones to use with their "normal" SIMs...
And there I was toying with the idea of picking up an iPhone this week ...
Maybe I'll just get some nice games for my Apple MacBook Pro :)
Age of Empires anyone?
According to TechCrunch UK the Swedish site owners have received over 4000 pages of legal documents.
The Swedish site has a history of fighting legal challenges. That's the most diplomatic way of describing how they view a legal challenge. If you have a read over their legal page you'll get an idea of their views!
However in the case of Jaiku the 24 hours or so downtime is actually welcome.
If Jaiku can resolve some of their scalability issues by going offline for a couple of days, then I'm more than happy to do without my daily dose.
There's more information on their official blog, where they talk about database migrations etc., The blog post isn't that detailed, but it's there if you want to read it
You'd think that at this stage I'd be that bit better organised, but of course I'm not. I've organised hotels, my pickup from LAX and all that stuff. I've even got myself a fistful of dollars, albeit a small one.
What I haven't done, yet again, is even start to pack my bag.
I guess I could say that I've mentally packed it, but you can't wear your thoughts !!
So it's another evening of chaos tomorrow while I try desperately to ram a week's worth of clean clothes into my poor unsuspecting suitcase!
I was looking into things to do in LA before DomainFest and I still haven't made up my mind.
Wicked is still playing in Hollywood, but I've heard very mixed reviews.
The other thing that attracted my attention was, naturally enough, the cinema. But it's January, so it's not exactly the best time of the year to see films. There are a few upcoming releases that I'd like to see, but they're all being released after I leave. Of course I'm sure there are plenty of films still showing that I wouldn't mind seeing and if nothing else the cinemas are bigger and cheaper in Los Angeles than they are in Ireland.
Another attraction that caught my eye was the Star Trek Expo, which is starting its US tour this Friday. It looks like it could be great fun if you're a Trekkie. If nothing else I'm sure there'd be plenty of characters to see outside. All I need to do is work out how to get myself from downtown Hollywood to Long Beach without spending a fortune...
Alternatively there's always Warner Brothers.. I was hoping to make a pilgrimage there in November when I was over for the ICANN meeting, but I ended up going to Universal Studios instead.
At least I can safely say I'm truly spoilt for choice!
More sordid details chez Frank
EDIT: Of course in my stupidity I referred to "playgirls" and not to playboy centerfolds or playboy bunnies. Sorry about the confusion! I meant to refer to playboy centrefolds!
I've finally put some content on a subdomain off technology.ie. I've setup some forums there to take over from a now defunct forum I was running... Why? Well the old domain name wasn't particularly "strong" so using a more generic domain may work out better. Of course I could be completely wrong, but experiments like this are fun !
On a completely unrelated topic ...
The annual Blacknight sale hasn't been announced to the public yet but will be later today. To find out about the special reductions and possibly win a prize you'll need to be either a Blacknight client OR a subscriber to the Blacknight newsletter. More details and signup here
Web 2.0 was a hot topic. Is it still?
Social networking? That's been around for quite some time, as has blogging, so they're probably not that "hot" and newsworthy as they might have been 18 months ago.
What about micro-formats? All this talk of Jaiku (and how broken it's become since the takeover) and that awful Twitter thing. Is it even worth talking about?
I have a pretty good idea what's happening in the hosting / domain space, but there's a lot more to the internet industry than what I, as one person, see.
I'm probably missing out on something. Then again, maybe I'm not !
The site is very simple. You test your vocabulary and for every correct answer you provide they donate 20 grains of rice to the UN.
From the "about" page:
Some of the words are quite easy, while others are a bit "off the wall", so it can be quite challenging.
FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site
Looking at the period covering January 2007 to January 2008, the traffic on here was pretty steady with two notable spikes.
The first one was back in August when I posted about getting a Mac:
Moving to the Darkside
The other one that caused a spike was when I made the frontpage of Digg with the Monster spam debacle. The main post was this one, but there were a few related ones as well.
The most popular entries that still attract traffic are still the same as before, which always amazes me.
They weren't even particularly long posts in some cases, such as the one about Ubuntu on a bootable USB
The thing that always interests me is browser usage.
As in the past the majority of visitors use Firefox, but Internet Explorer comes a close second. What's interesting is the number of mobile users. They may not be that numerous, or their devices maybe reporting under other UserAgent strings, but they are growing in numbers.
In terms of OS usage the split is clearly between Windows, Linux and Mac users.
All very interesting, but totally useless information!
Basically if you pre-order an item the "guarantee" means that you are rewarded with the lowest price possible, so if an item is listed at one price when you order and it drops before the release date you'll actually get a refund.
Pretty cool!
However, that doesn't mean that I won't play games, especially if they are engaging.
Paul invited me to play Travian yesterday evening and I've been hooked ever since.
The game's concept is very similar to Age of Empires, in that you have to build up your resources and civilisation level in order to advance. The main difference is that it's 100% browser based and doesn't require any extra plugins, so you can play it on pretty much any OS / browser combination.

When I heard that Royal Mail were doing a special release this year to celebrate the centenary of Ian Fleming's birth I was really excited.
The issue is simply gorgeous (the image from the Royal Mail site really doesn't do it justice).
Rather than limit myself to the first day covers I also opted for the mint stamps set and both overprint options. I guess in philatelic terms that's a bit nerdy ! But they are amazing.
Check out the Royal Mail site for more details on the issue

Back in December I posted about my quest to find a multiregion capable HD DVD or Blu Ray player.
It was a very frustrating quest, but not nearly as frustrating as the entire HD DVD vs Blu Ray format war. As a consumer I felt like "piggy in the middle".
However, in the last couple of weeks the format war between HD DVD and Blu Ray seems to have almost drawn to a close, as Warner Brothers decided to drop HD DVD later this year.
So that means that investing in a HD DVD player now would probably be a really bad idea.
A couple of people suggested that I get a Sony Playstation 3 and "chip" it ie. open the "black box" and get "down and dirty" with a soldering iron.
Anyone who knows me personally would know that giving me a soldering iron probably isn't a good idea. While I used to dabble in electronics (and other things) when I was a teenager I am not to be trusted with such things in general.
So what are my options?
With my "normal" DVD player I was able to find a simple code hack that allowed me to render it region free very easily, but if such codes exist for Blu Ray players they aren't "in the wild", or at least I haven't been able to find them. And believe me, I have been looking!
Fortunately people more adept with soldering irons have come up with a couple of solutions.
A Swedish company is offering a couple of pre-hacked models, though their site is in Swedish! A quick conversion shows that you'd pay over 650 euro for the cheapest one exclusive of shipping costs.
Another solution lies with a company in Holland that has a number of models available 600 euro upwards.
The Sony BDP-S300 comes in at EUR599, while the Sony BDP-S500 is EUR899.
Checking out the two models (unhacked) on another site which has a comparison tool wasn't particularly illuminating.
Both machines seem to do exactly the same thing, or maybe I'm missing a subtle but significant difference?
I'm leaning towards the BDP-S300 simply because it is EUR300 cheaper.
Of course I could live without a HD movie player, but I'd really like to be able to take advantage of the higher definition and extra features on the discs.
Oh what to do??
Why can't people standardise terminology?
Why do people insist on using terms they don't fully understand and probably get semi-wrong, thus confusing their interlocutor even further?
While I was expecting it to be a fun event I wasn't expecting it to coincide so closely with the latest domain scandal - Network Solutions are up to no good! It seems like the internet industry gets over one bit of furore only for another one to come out of the woodwork.
What will be next?
In any case I expect NetSol's latest ploy to be a hot topic.
Of course a trip to LA would be a bit boring if I was closeted away in a hotel for my entire stay, so I'm hoping to take in a few touristy things over the couple of "free" days prior to the event. I'm not 100% what I'll get up to yet, but LA isn't exactly a boring city, so I'm sure I'll find something to keep myself amused :)
If nothing else I can always go and ogle the new Apple Macs!
Anyhow I've also been looking at a lot of gadgets and gizmos for the kitchen.
Some of them are pretty cool, but others are more stylish than practical.
Take this salad bowl set: (found via this site)

It looks fantastic, doesn't it?
But would you be willing to dish out $110 for it? There are a lot of other kitchen gadgets I'd get first.

It now seems that my fears were not without some grounds. Anyone using Jaiku regularly has probably noticed how slow the entire system has become in recent weeks and how so many of the cool features are either not working or extremely slow.
It now seems that there are issues internally.
What are Google playing at?
Richard mentioned that a number of the EUBrowser squats have been dropped
Someone created a firefox search plugin thingy for searching domains from the Blacknight site - very cool!
Now I really should get back to cleaning the house ....
